5 reasons why large organizations and associations choose Umbraco as a CMS

Many large organizations and associations are using CMS solutions that have become too expensive, too complex, or simply no longer fit the business. Editors struggle with things that should be simple, and the technology begins to set limits on what the organization can do. After working with organizations such as LRF, the Tenants' Association, and several sports federations, we see some recurring reasons why the choice often lands on Umbraco CMS.

1. No traditional CMS licensing fees

Many of our clients have used licence-based platforms such as Episerver/Optimizely or Sitecore, sometimes more out of habit than as a deliberate choice. Over time, costs can increase and no longer reflect what the organisation actually uses.

Umbraco is open source and does not come with traditional CMS licensing fees that tie up your budget. This frees up resources to invest in what actually drives your organisation forward.

2. Editors regain control

One problem we often see is that the interface is unnecessarily complicated for content editors. When a tool is difficult to use, publishing content takes longer than it should. Sometimes, editors also become dependent on developers for changes they should be able to make themselves.

Umbraco's interface is designed for content editors, communications professionals and website managers. It is easy to navigate and understand, allowing teams to manage content independently without waiting for a developer to make every small adjustment.

3. Less vendor lock-in and greater control

Many organisations we work with have found themselves stuck with a solution that has become increasingly difficult to maintain. Over the years, new functionality has been built on top of legacy code, making even small changes expensive and complicated.

With Umbraco's open-source foundation, you gain greater control over your solution and more flexibility to develop it around your specific needs. You become less dependent on a single vendor's roadmap and can evolve your platform alongside your organisation.

4. Easier management of a large organisation

Associations and large organisations rarely have just one website to manage. They may have regional branches, member associations, local websites or multiple brands under the same umbrella. Often, many different people are responsible for publishing content.

With Umbraco, multiple websites can be managed within a single solution. This makes it easier to maintain a consistent structure, content strategy and brand identity while allowing different parts of the organisation to meet their own needs.

Umbraco's user management features allow you to control exactly who can do what. Editors can be given access only to the sections of the website they are responsible for, with different permissions for creating, editing and publishing content. Content can also be submitted for approval before going live.

This allows regional teams to manage their own pages while the central communications team maintains an overview of the entire platform. This is how organisations such as the Swedish Floorball Federation, the Swedish Orienteering Federation and the Swedish Athletics Federation work, with more than 100 editors across regional branches throughout Sweden using the same solution.

5. A platform that grows with your organisation

The needs of a large organisation rarely stand still. New services are introduced, integrations need to be developed and members' expectations continue to evolve. Your website platform needs to support these changes without requiring an entirely new solution every time.

With Umbraco, you can build a flexible foundation that evolves over time and integrates with the systems your organisation already uses.

A CMS decision that became a reference for another organisation

Sometimes, a successful platform migration also helps another organisation make its decision.

When the Swedish Union of Tenants (Hyresgästföreningen) was choosing a new CMS, they wanted to find an organisation of a similar size that had already made the same transition. LRF's earlier decision to move to Umbraco became an important reference point.

For large organisations, changing CMS is about much more than technology. It is about choosing a platform that enables editors to work efficiently and supports the organisation's long-term development. At Toxic, we have helped many large organisations and associations do exactly that.

Time to switch platforms? Signs that the destination's website has done its job

Therefore, the booking system and the website should communicate with each other.

A destination often uses several systems simultaneously. Accommodations are booked in one system, ticket purchases or activities in another, and the information about the guests is in a third. When the systems are not connected to each other, the information on the web becomes incorrect or must be moved manually. Here we explain what an integration means and what it does for both the guest and the staff.

From winter to summer: a website that adapts to the right season

For many destinations, the operations change several times a year. The ski slope becomes a bike park and the bathing season transitions into conference season. The website needs to keep up with each transition without a developer having to be involved every time. Here we go through what usually changes between the seasons and how a flexible website makes the switch easier for the editors.

Ten companies, ten websites: when is it time to consolidate the group's websites?

In many corporations, each company has its own website, built at different times by different agencies in different systems. It works for a while, but over time the websites become expensive to manage and difficult to overview. Here we go through the signs that it is time to consolidate the websites and what the corporation gains from it. As an example, we explain how Toxic and Industrireklam consolidated the Weland Group's companies into Weland Light, a common template in Umbraco where changes are rolled out to multiple websites simultaneously.

Why more and more companies are digitizing their B2B sales and how it works

This is one of the most common reasons why more B2B companies are now taking the step towards their own e-commerce platform. In this post, we will go through how orders are often handled today, what problems it creates, and how a digital platform changes the picture.
